From the first view from the plane as we were landing in Greece the blues just kept getting bluer. 💙
Greece - Part 1
This post is filled with photos from our land tour of the mainland of Greece. We landed in Athens and drove to Nafplio for a few days, which is a vacation spot for locals on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Beautiful clear water, restaurants, waterfront spots for enjoying a drink with a view, and local small shops along narrow streets. Definitely worth a visit and a great spot to relax before we began a very busy trip. From here we visited Mycenae an archaeological site recognized by UNESCO World Heritage List. This dates back in Greek history about 1600BC.
We then made our way to Athens stopping at Epidaurus ancient theatre & museum before continuing on to Corinth. We made a stop for photos of the Corinth Canal before passing over it to visit the ruins in Corinth. The Neolithic pottery dates the area occupied since 6500 BC. Corinth is known for Christians from Saint Paul’s writings about 50AD.
We arrived in Athens with a day to ourselves before joining a group tour, it was a pre-cruise program with our Oceania Cruise. We made new friends we would enjoy time with for the rest of the trip. In Athens we toured the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, had a traditional taverna lunch, a dinner with a view of the Acropolis at night and a dinner at the Michelin starred Varoulko Seaside Restaurant in Piraeus. Piraeus is the port where we boarded the Oceania Nautica to explore more of Greece. (photos from the cruise portion will be coming soon in my next post)
The last row of photos are of Delphi high in the mountains. Then we went to Meteora, a place I have longed wanted to see in person and well worth the long drive back to catch our ship. It is so unbelievable these buildings could be built here and although not as many as they used to have they do still have residents. Amazing place, so thankful I got to see them in person.
